Chapter Profiles GlobeMed at Boston College
Who We Are
Founded in 2010, GlobeMed at Boston College is one of 46 GlobeMed chapters working to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world. We partner with CCC-UNSCH in Ayacucho, Peru to support access to health education, care, and advocacy for the community’s older adults.
Our Partner - Centro de Capacitacion de Campesino de la Universidad Nacional San Cristobal de Huamanga (CCC-UNSCH) in Ayacucho, Peru
CCC-UNSCH has been working for over 30 years old to support the older adult within the communities of Ayacucho. CCC-UNSCH works by mobilizing groups of older adults in communities to discuss community health issues and develop projects that create innovative solutions. Older adults serve a vital role in the Ayacucho community, often caring for grandchildren while parents search for work elsewhere. Despite their crucial role as caregivers, breadwinners and leaders in the community, many lack access to their basic needs and adequate health care for either themselves or their grandchildren.
CCC-UNSCH works by mobilizing groups of older adults in communities to provide a forum for discussing problems and brainstorming projects to address important issues. For example, CCC-UNSCH is tackling malnutrition by collaborating with a team of older adults to cultivate a small garden and raise cuy (guinea pig) to supplement their food supply. The results of such projects permeate throughout the community, as grandparents are better able to care for their grandchildren and for themselves.
Our Project - $3000 to Support CCC-UNSCH's Health Programs
This year, GlobeMed at Boston College is fundraising $3000 to support a handicraft income generating project for the elderly of Ayacucho, Peru. With a high proportion of adults traveling elsewhere for work, many households in Ayacucho are headed by elderly grandparents. These older adults play the crucial role of caregiver and breadwinner in their community, yet often face a lack of access to health and vocational resources. Through this project, CCC-UNSCH will provide the opportunity for the community’s older adults to build a sustainable source of income through handicraft production, allowing them to support themselves and health, education and well-being of the younger generation in their care.
Join us in supporting the leaders and caregivers of Ayacucho so that they can support the generations below them!
