15 Founders in 15 Days - Marina Fitzpatrick, University of Washington

We want to give a lot of GlobeMed love to Marina Fitzpatrick from the University of Washington.  Marina is a rising sophomore studying International Studies and Global Health.  In the founder application, we asked Marina to describe an event her chapter could host to support a campaign to raise money to buy bicycles for community health workers.  Here is her creative response!

" I think we should capitalize upon the fact that for the past three years Washington has remained the number one bicycle friendly state in the U.S. and Seattle the 4th city. The plan is to have a kick off event, collaborating with the ASUW student government bicycle shop where we will introduce GlobeMed and our partnership while laying out our monthly fundraising plans and events. Contrary to other bike shops in the region, ASUW’s goal is not to turn a profit, but rather to provide a service to the community. In addition to the low-cost service fees, we would offer the option of a five-dollar donation to our GlobeMed partnership, ‘bringing bikes to Nepalis’. Alongside our on-campus bike shop we have established a partnership with the UW campus police, who sell abandoned bicycles to students at affordable prices, where 25% of the profits will go towards GlobeMed, giving bikes to others who need them more than we may. To welcome in the spring weather in Seattle, we are going to hold events such as ‘Bike for a Cause” or ‘Bike for a Buck’. These would be events similar to a walk-a-thon; for every day one bikes to work, school or wherever it may be, donors pledge an amount of money per day for the duration of the event."

Hopefully Marina will be able to host this and many other incredible events on her campus!  She is going to take GlobeMed by storm.

When asked for her Top 5 List, Marina gave us:

My Top five 5 "sounds":
1) fire crackling
2) rain thumping on the rooftop
3) water lapping against the hull
4) swooshing wind
5) my heart pounding

And here are all the books she is currently reading (and it is a crazy amount!): “I am currently reading Blink by Malcolm Gladwell, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, Blessed Unrest by Paul Hawken, The New York Times and The Economist (ha so cliche) and The Girl With a Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest all by Stieg Larsson.”

Marina is going to be an inspiring chapter founder and the GlobeMed family can’t wait to get to know her better!
