15 Founders in 15 Days - Parth Shah of the University of Virginia
by Maya Cohen on June 21, 2011
Our next fantastic founder is Parth Shah, a rising junior from the University of Virginia, where he is studying Biology and Public Health. The GlobeMed family is so excited to welcome him and his chapter! Here is a really inspiring quote from his application that tells a little bit about Parth’s life and motivation!
"I lived in Uganda until moving to Virginia at the age of 12. I am grateful to have lived in a country with a healthcare system that is simply not equal in terms of either quantity or quality of care. As a child, I saw things in the streets that people growing up in America would be unable to grasp. I have seen mothers homeless on the streets with 4 or 5 young children. I have seen boys and girls no older than 10 trying to sell bars of soap for money to buy some food. It drives me crazy to see all of the waste in this country in comparison to the struggles of millions of children across the world. I have heard some people state that hunger and poverty is simply mother nature’s way of weeding out the incapable. This opinion is infuriating because of the careless lack of humanity. The media screams and shouts over a rape or murder in an area of high income, but has become desensitized to the millions of the children and adults in Africa with nowhere to go and no chance of survival. We complain of high birth rates in these countries, but we fail to understand the simple connection of a mother simply giving birth to multiple babies to increase the chance of one surviving past the age of 2. Mothers are mothers wherever you are in this world. You take a child away from a well-off celebrity, the world will turn upside down into a manhunt. You take a child away from a mother in Africa to turn them into child soldiers, the world doesn’t even blink. I refuse to be one of the millions that know but simply continue their everyday life, as this life of distinct inequality brings no purpose of satisfaction."
I don’t think we need to even say how beautiful this story is. We know that Parth will use his life experiences to create an incredible and influential GlobeMed chapter that will rock his campus!
