Partnerships In Action: Looking forward to the 18th Annual Partners In Health Symposium

by Jill Shah on September 24, 2011

This summer, I had the privilege of serving as a summer intern at Partners In Health.  Based out of the Boston offices, summer interns had the opportunity to learn about the partner organizations that PIH works with to operate projects around the world in 12 countries.  These partner organizations include Zanmi Lasante in Haiti, Inshuti Mu Buzima in Rwanda, and the PACT project right here in Boston, MA.

After weeks of hearing about and getting to know these organizations, I find it surreal and thrilling that today, representatives from all 12 field projects have converged upon Cambridge, MA for the 18th Annual Thomas J. White Symposium. The symposium serves as PIH’s yearly reflection and a chance to honor Tom White, longtime PIH partner and supporter who passed away this January.

This year’s Symposium will highlight the importance of partnerships in sustaining PIH’s work and building the movement for global health and social justice. In particular, GlobeMed founding member and Chief Operating Officer of Tiyatien Health (TH), Peter Luckow will explore the impact of partnerships on TH’s work in Liberia. Among these include TH’s partnership with GlobeMed at University of Michigan, which raised over $11,000 to support TH’s staff of 40 community health workers in Zwedru, Liberia. Learn more about UMich & TH’s 40 with 40 project here.

At GlobeMed, partnerships form the very core of our work, and I am honored to attend the symposium and celebrate the partnerships that have improved the health of the poor and marginalized around the world. Throughout the weekend, updates and reflections will be posted on GlobeMed’s blog, Facebook page, and Twitter (#pihsym). Join in the conversation and watch the livestream of the symposium here beginning 3 pm EST!
