PIH’s Program Management Guide: Key Takeaway #4

by Jill Shah on October 26, 2011

Here's #4 of our key takeaways from Partners In Health's Program Management Guide!

#4. Using Monitoring and Evaluation for Action

Monitoring and evaluation is crucial for any partnership to learn from past lessons and improve. Creating feedback loops and evaluating systems can help you and your partner identify strengths and weaknesses in your partnership. This unit provides ample information on how to plan M and E, build capacity to implement it, and translate the data into tangible change.

While M and E is vital for any good program, it is especially important precisely in such resource-limited settings. This is because, if it is done correctly, M and E allows you to learn if your programs are doing what you said they would, if services are being delivered according to your program’s standards, and if programs are making a difference. Where resources are tangibly scarce, you will want to be sure that your patients are actually benefiting from your program’s activities and services. In addition, you may be able to use M and E data to prove your effectiveness to your donors and other relevant agencies.”
