PIH’s Program Management Guide: Key Takeaway #5
by Jill Shah on October 26, 2011
Here's our fifth and final takeaway for GlobeMed partnerships from Partners In Health's Program Management Guide! Thank you to all the staff at Partners In Health who put together this amazing resource. We can’t wait to see how our network translates these lessons into action.
#5. Maximizing Impact through Advocacy
Having a solid partnership is the foundation for sustainable change; moreover, advocating for your partner in the global arena is a crucial step towards challenging the oppressive structures causing ill health in your partner community. However, envisioning greater change first requires grounding your partnership in core values.
“The issues you advocate for may change in response to specific events, but they will and should remain rooted in the principles and vision that guide your work”
The information provided in this unit should be an important reference for expanding your partnership with advocacy programs. Once you have a clear understanding of your vision and impact, building an advocacy network can empower your partner community to realize the potential for change and fight against structural violence.
“Although PIH works in partnership with local institutions and within the bounds of local mores, advocating for the rights of the poor can also challenge existing interests and power relationships. To help overcome those factors that block your patients’ access to health care, you will need to practice a delicate balance of patience and respect in all relationships.
“Providing clear evidence of your program’s effectiveness to demonstrate the impact of your work on the community, increasing the strength of your voice by collaborating with others, and using a variety of media to disseminate your key advocacy issues are all important tools that will help you garner support to make the changes your community needs”
