PIH’s Program Management Guide: Key Takeaway #1
by Jill Shah on October 26, 2011
Partners In Health recently released the PIH Program Management Guide for other organizations to use as integral support for their own programs. The guide provides crucial information on how to approach health problems in resource-poor settings, understand what needs to be done, and leverage every resource necessary, from medicines and technology to connections and advocacy networks, to build sustainable, effective heath systems.
After reading the guide, we found many parts were useful to our chapters and partners, and we hope our entire network can utilize the following lessons to strengthen our organization and deepen our impact. We gathered 5 key takeaways for the GlobeMed network that we'll highlight over the next 5 days. Here's the first key takeaway:
#1. Learning about the Local Context

Truly understanding your partner and partner community is the first step toward meaningful impact. This unit gives a step-by-step guide to creating a community profile, including factors ranging from health and population groups to culture and community leaders.
“Above all, listen to those affected by structural violence. What are their needs? What are their greatest assets and challenges? In what ways can you begin to help them improve their situation? By listening with humility, you are likely to uncover issues and concerns that will affect your priorities and help you plan and deliver effective services.”
