Sid Singh - Social Media Ambassador at the 2011 GBC Conference

As Victor and Tracy have already mentioned, on Wednesday morning, I will join more than 1,000 business executives, government officials, and professionals in the global health and non-profit fields at the opening sessions of the 2011 Global Business Coalition Conference as a Global Health Ambassador. Together, conference attendees hope to delve into a question that GlobeMed has also sought to answer: what is, truly, the responsibility of the private sector in building the movement for global health equity?

Despite recent criticism and debate, I believe one thing is clear: there exists a tremendous desire within the business world to advance global health. However, as we'll see over the course of the conference, there also exists tremendous diversity in what is thought to be the "best" way to involve the private sector.

Personally, I'm especially looking forward to the discussion during this afternoon's panel on "Men Who Make it their Business to Improve Women's Lives." It will be interesting to consider how, exactly, men can accelerate the progress in eliminating the social, economic, and health disparities facing women and girls around the world. What will make this session particularly remarkable will be the variety in perspective: we will hear from corporate leaders working alongside political and civil society leaders who are spearheading important policy initiatives.

Furthermore, on Thursday, June 2, I'm really excited to be involved in a conversation that will become incredibly important in the near future: the role of socially-minded entrepreneurs within the broader movement to eliminate inequities - especially within the field of global health. Here is some information about the session - and here is some background reading on some recent news regarding one of the session's participants, Vestergaard Frandsen.

This is definitely something I'll touch upon in subsequent posts (and maybe even here directly from Mikkel!) - but read up on it for now and definitely shoot over any questions you have! I can be reached at sid(at)globemed.org and via Twitter.
