Who We Are
Founded in 2011, GlobeMed at Emory is one of 46 chapters dedicated to strengthening the movement for global health equity and improving the health of the impoverished around the world. We partner with MAP Foundation, a grassroots organization in Chiang Mai, Thailand, to empower Burmese migrant communities.
Our Partner - MAP Foundation in Chiang Mai, Thailand
MAP Foundation (Migrant Assistance Program) is a grassroots Thai non-governmental organization that seeks to empower migrant communities from Burma living and working in Thailand. MAP was established in 1996 and has been working to improve migrant rights in the fields of health, labor, and women’s rights. MAP works towards a vision of the future where people from Burma have the right to stay securely within their home country as well as the right to migrate safely and where the human rights and freedoms of all migrants are fully respected and observed.
Our Project - $3,000 for Migrant Health and Wellbeing Training
This year, we aim to raise $3,000 to provide training programs for migrants to learn about health issues, their health and human rights, and how they can access health care and other programs provided by the state. $3,000 supports one comprehensive training program in one migrant community consisting of five separate training sessions.
Most migrant communities are remote and isolated from Thai mainstream society. Migrants in Thailand face significant health problems since their living conditions are typically temporary and unsanitary. Moreover, migrant workers face dangerous working conditions. These factors directly affect migrant health both at work and at living sites.
The main objective of the project “Migrant Health and Well-Being” is to empower migrants to access health care and health rights protection programs and reduce exploitation of migrant workers.
