A Letter from our New Chapter Advisors, Maya and Bianca

Dear GlobeMed Nation:

What an exciting time for our network! As GlobeMed enjoys unprecedented success and growth, it is a thrill to join the National Office as your Chapter Advisors.  During the years at our respective chapters, we witnessed firsthand the power of students partnering with grassroots organizations to effect real change. This year, GlobeMed at UNC coalesced into a tight-knit team allowing it to triple fundraising efforts and cultivate a deep commitment to its partner and project. GlobeMed at Columbia surpassed its goal of $5,000 for income-generating projects in Gulu, Uganda by using innovative campaigns that connected Columbia students directly with the chapter's partner community. We are excited to bring this experience, passion and energy to our roles as advocates and mentors for the network’s dynamic leaders and brilliant chapter founders.  Expanding from 19 to 33 chapters provides our network the incredible opportunity to achieve even greater potential by connecting our movement to new campuses and partnerships. As the momentum behind GlobeMed builds, we can't wait to be inspired and challenged by your vision for a more just and equitable world.  Guided by the principle of pragmatic solidarity, let's work together to translate this vision into measurable impact. Now, more than ever, we have the resources and global reach to become the next generation of global health leaders (that means you).

Love!,

M & B

Bios:

Maya Cohen was born in New Rochelle, New York and graduated from Barnard College this May with a degree in English Literature. She fell in love with GlobeMed when she learned about the organization at the Northwestern Conference on Human Rights. In the fall of 2008, she founded the Columbia/Barnard chapter and served as the chapter’s co-president. Besides leading her to become deeply enamored of goats, GlobeMed has given her the wonderful memories of watching her chapter’s members gather from different backgrounds and different perspectives to debate an issue, share thoughts, find common ground, and build friendships around common passions.

This spring, Bianca Nguyen graduated from University of Northern Carolina with a B.S. in Radiologic Science. Ever since serving on GlobeMed at UNC’s founding executive board in 2007, Bianca has devoted her heart and soul to ensuring the success and staying power of the UNC chapter. Her experiences within GlobeMed at UNC range from forming a local partnership with the UNC Center for AIDS Research, embarking on GlobeMed’s inaugural Partnership Search Fellowship to Gulu in the summer of 2008 where she found and solidified a partnership with Health Alert-Uganda, and serving as President from 2008-2009, and Co-Campaigns Chair from 2009-2010.
