Chapters showcase their work with a little friendly competition
Posted on May 7, 2009 by Ashley Hagaman
For the first time, the National Office implemented a set of network wide contests in order to highlight our chapter's work over the school year. Coined as the GlobeMed Chapter Challenges, members worked together to submit entries in several different contests: a media presentation, a photo story, and best globalhealthU event on their campus. Individual members could also submit entries for a senior speech and a photo contest. Submissions were voted on during the GlobeMed Global Health Summit and winners were announced at the concluding Student Dinner on the last night of the conference. We are proud to announce this years winners (be sure to check out the winning Media Presentation!)

Best globalhealthU Event - GlobeMed at UNC - Chapel Hill
globalhealthU is GlobeMed's signature year long curriculum designed to give students a critical understanding of global health issues. Chapters follow five different themes throughout the year, foucsin on topics such as human rights, structural violence, and globalization. As teams learn together through different articles, documentaries, and professionals in the field, they continue to find creative ways to better understand these crucial issues. Our challenge for our network was to submit a report explaining a creative event they held during the Development and International Aid topical theme that tied directly to their health partner and project while bringing members together in a fun and exciting way. GlobeMed at UNC - Chapel Hill won this event by creating a game in which chapter members collaborated together to match successful public health interventions with the country that initiated it, such as the 100% Condom Program in Thailand. GlobeMed at UNC - Chapel Hill students not only learned about these programs and why the models were so effective, but also identified similar practices within their partner organization in Uganda. Events like UNC - Chapel Hill's allow members to build comprehensive knowledge of key structures that impact global health while learning and growing together as a GlobeMed community.
Senior Speech - Jon Lichkus, President of GlobeMed at Penn State University and Christine Lin, President of GlobeMed at Truman State University had the opportunity to address the rest of the network at the closing Summit student dinner. Both seniors spoke of how GlobeMed not only gave them knowledge and a better worldview, but a path for their careers and an everlasting community of close friends that will be sure to influence their lives for years to come.
Highlight from Jon Lichkus's Speech : "I came to realize the promise of GlobeMed—that we as students, working together with partner organizations around the world, might be able to improve global health, and in the process, develop into a new generation of global health leaders. Tonight, I can say without hesitation, that this promise is being realized. At Penn State, and at Chapters throughout the network, we’re beginning to meet that challenge. In doing so, GlobeMed fundamentally changed my perspective and goals in life, and molded me into the person I am today." Click here to read the complete version.
Highlight from Christine Lin's Speech: "I’ve been with the GlobeMed at Truman chapter for almost 3 years now, and have seen some dramatic changes, from our first executive board meeting with 10 students to now a 60 member powerhouse that is working for global health equity. I’d like to take this time to thank the GlobeMed national office and the GlobeMed at Truman team for all the support and help you’ve given throughout the years. It’s been an honor to work with such inspiring students, and I love being part of a team, a team with different backgrounds and different majors and minors, a team that is a bit unruly and brilliant, a team that I can always talk to on Google chat at 3 o’ clock in the morning, a team that can watch the news and know that we can do something about it, and best of all, a team that understands the importance of camaraderie and community." Individual Photo Contest - Evan Blank, President of GlobeMed at Washington University in St. Louis
Although the above chapters are our winners, we had several other extraordinary entries. Loyola University , UNC - Chapel Hill , and The University of Michigan submitted Media Presentations as well. Click the links to check them out.
