"College students are amongst our most innovative thinkers on the planet. So it's little surprise that they've formed GlobeMed." -Philanthroper

Starting today at 10 AM EST, GlobeMed is featured on Philanthroper for 24 hours! Since the launch, over 70 people have contributed more than $200.

Help us raise $1000 by donating as little as $1, or $10, so that we can link more students and communities together to improve the health of the poor. All donations up to $500 will be matched by an anonymous donor. Visit www.philanthroper.com to make your contribution!

Raise the stakes! Why stop at $500? We're looking for another generous supporter to raise our matching pool to $750. Please contact info@globemed.org to explore this opportunity and raise a total of $1500 for GlobeMed!

Here's the story Philanthroper published about GlobeMed on Monday, September 12, 2011.

College students are amongst our most innovative thinkers on the planet. So it's little surprise that they've formed GlobeMed. Completely student-led, they're a network of 46 universities (and growing), each paired with a nonprofit somewhere in the world that's tackling problems in health. From Detroit, MI to Ayacucho, Peru, from Indiana University to USC, students assemble to help those in poverty around the world.

"We're not physicians. We're not nurses," says Director of Development Bianca Nguyen. "But what we do have to offer are innovations and university resources, passion and energy."

What we like about GlobeMed is that they're not about taking trips and volunteering for a few weeks, just to walk away and return to life as normal. Sure, students will visit their partner sites, but it's more to get a ground-level view of the real problems at hand. When they return home, it's to share what they've learned and spur their local community to give money and take action with their partner abroad.

"It's definitely a solution to the concept of volun-tourism," says Nguyen. "You're going into that community, but you maintain that relationship."

Ultimately, GlobeMed informs the next generation about the world's problems while helping communities around the world save lives in the process.

"I just feel like we're on the cusp of something really huge," says Nguyen. "You can feel the excitement growing amongst our students. And when you get in the room with them, it's buzzing with enthusiasm."
