"Maya has a record of strong management, bold vision, and passion for GlobeMed's mission that has enabled her to play a leading role in GlobeMed's success," said Board Chair Brian Hanson.  "She is poised to work effectively with the staff, board, chapter leaders, partner communities, and supporters to build on GlobeMed's achievements and momentum."

Maya joined the GlobeMed National Office in 2010 as one of two new program directors along with Bianca Nguyen, playing a crucial role in envisioning and implementing the expansion of the GlobeMed network. She advised sixteen of 32 GlobeMed chapters around the country and supported the selection and launch of GlobeMed's newest partnerships in Southeast Asia. Maya and Bianca guided GlobeMed chapters to double the network's fundraising for GlobeMed's grassroots health partners in 2010-2011 while advancing the organization's global health curriculum and leadership programs.

Prior to serving as Program Director, Maya founded the GlobeMed chapter at Columbia University in New York City, leading a team of students to build one of the most effective chapters in the GlobeMed network. The chapter's many accomplishments include forming a close-knit partnership with Gulu Women's Economic Development and Globalization (GWED-G), a grassroots organization seeking to advance health, human rights, and women's empowerment in northern Uganda.

"I am deeply honored to have been asked to serve as GlobeMed's next Executive Director," Cohen said.  "GlobeMed has been a defining force in my life in myriad ways, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside our students, partner organizations, and corporate and individual supporters to build a healthier world for all. Together, I know that we can continue to deepen and expand the impact of this incredible organization."

Beginning with the new fiscal and academic year in September 2011, GlobeMed will be an integrated network of 46 chapters, reaching 1,500 students on university campuses across the US, whose partnerships hand-in-hand with community-based health organizations in Latin American, Africa, Asia and the U.S. seek long-term strategies to improve the health of people living in poverty.
