Chakrabarty is a third-year student in the six-year B.A./M.D. program at UMKC.

"I don't think I was the right candidate for the six-year medical program," Chakrabarty said. "Mainly because I developed love for the social sciences. But by the time I discovered it, it was too late."

Chakrabarty was too far in her studies to make a change. She started to doubt the path she was on. "There was a lot of, 'Why am I doing this? Why am I here?' But then I became more involved with GlobeMed. And it gave me the aspect of learning social sciences and integrating them into my future, into health care."

Chakrabarty said her involvement in GlobeMed changed her life. "I was the shyest person growing up," Chakrabarty said. "Every function, I hid behind my mom's sari (traditional Indian dress) and clung to the cloth. GlobeMed broke my social shyness."

Student life cannot be only about studying, Chakrabarty maintains. "Because of GlobeMed, my life as a student has a much greater purpose," she said.

"There is so much we can do."
