GlobeMed celebrates Jon Shaffer's leadership and begins the search for its next Executive Director

Jon Shaffer has announced that he will step down as Executive Director of GlobeMed on July 31st. “I feel privileged and honored to have been a part of this amazing organization and to have worked with incredible students, grassroots health organizations, and leaders in the field to make a difference in people’s health and lives and contributing to development of young people into lifelong leaders for global health equity,” Shaffer said.

Jon started his association with GlobeMed as a freshman when he joined the Northwestern University chapter.  In his senior year, he became Chapter President.  Right after graduation, he moved into the role of the Executive Director for the national organization.

As Executive Director, Jon successfully led GlobeMed through a remarkable transformation from a young student-led startup to a nationwide organization of 46 chapters and over 1000 active students.  Individual chapters have increased their own fundraising to support their grassroots partners around the world and are having measurable impact in each of the communities they serve. As our students graduate, they remain committed to advancing global health throughout their lives and across a diverse array of professional paths and careers. In our annual exit surveys, 85% say that GlobeMed has been instrumental in engaging them in global health, and over 90% say that they intend to stay involved with GlobeMed, which they will have the opportunity to do through the launch of our alumni network.

This is an impressive record of accomplishment.

“Jon has guided GlobeMed through a truly remarkable transformation and we have benefited from the tireless energy, passion and strong sense of social purpose that Jon brought to this work,” said GlobeMed Board Chair Brian Hanson. “I know that I speak for the board, staff, the entire GlobeMed community and our friends and supporters in saying that we are very grateful for Jon’s leadership and all GlobeMed achieved during his tenure.”

Reflecting on GlobeMed’s future, Jon said, “Working together, we have made great progress already and I anticipate only an acceleration of GlobeMed’s role in changing the face of global health.”  As for his own future, Jon said, “GlobeMed has woven itself into the fabric of my being and I intend to remain a supporter and a community member. I will continue to accompany GlobeMed on its path to strengthen the movement for global health equity.”

A committee has been formed and a search launched for an Executive Director to ensure the continuity of strong leadership for the organization.   Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled with the first deadline of July 29.  The job posting can be found on the GlobeMed website at: http://www.globemed.org/jobs/new_staff

We look forward to working with you to continue to build GlobeMed and the impact of its students, partners and alumni on global health.
