GlobeMed National Office Welcomes New Chapter Advisors

We are so excited to introduce two new faces to the GlobeMed National Office this year!

As GlobeMed grows from 19 to 34 chapters this fall, two new full time staff will be joining our team to help guide the network in successful expansion: Maya Cohen (Barnard '10) and Bianca Nguyen (UNC '10). As Chapter Advisors, Maya and Bianca will be training and supporting the chapter presidents to run high-impact chapters and reach our network-wide goals. We are certain that these two vibrant and passionate individuals will bring a lot to the GlobeMed Network. With that, we'd like to introduce you to Maya and Bianca:

Maya was raised by her hippie social medicine-loving parents in New Rochelle, New York and will be graduating in May from Barnard College with a degree in English Lit. She fell in love with GlobeMed when she learned about the organization at the Northwestern Conference on Human Rights. In the fall of 2008, she founded the Columbia/Barnard chapter and served as the chapter’s Co-President until this winter. Besides leading her to become deeply enamored of goats, GlobeMed has given her the wonderful memories of watching her chapter’s members gather from different backgrounds and different perspectives to debate an issue, share thoughts, find common ground, and build friendships around common passions. Her work with GlobeMed has meant innumerable things to her over the past two years, but it was consistently both one of most challenging and most rewarding elements of her college life. She is so excited about having the opportunity to be a Chapter Advisor alongside the inimitable Bianca Nguyen and the rest of the amazing National Office and can’t wait to get to know both the new and established leaders across the network. Maya loves eating, dancing, traveling, hardcore chilling, and reading, especially Shakespeare, Virginia Woolf, and Calvin and Hobbes.

Bianca was born and raised in Charlotte, NC and will be graduating in May with a B.S. in Radiologic Science from the beautiful University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ever since serving on GlobeMed at UNC’s founding executive board in 2007, Bianca has devoted her heart and soul to ensuring the success and staying power of the UNC chapter. Her experiences within GlobeMed at UNC range from forming a local partnership with the UNC Center for AIDS Research, embarking on GlobeMed’s inaugural Partnership Search Fellowship to Gulu in the summer of 2008 where she found and solidified a partnership with Health Alert-Uganda, and serving as President from 2008-2009, and Co-Campaigns Chair from 2009-2010.  When reflecting on her time at UNC, Bianca’s favorite memories are inexorably linked to GlobeMed: hitch-hiking on the back of schoolchildren’s bicycles while searching for a grassroots partnership in Gulu, realizing the power of our network during America’s Giving Challenge 2009, watching GlobeMed at UNC grow to 40 strong members, and sitting in on Paul Farmer’s keynote at the most recent Summit.  Leaving GlobeMed at UNC will be incredibly bittersweet because of the deep connections and binding friendships she has built, but she is looking forward to entering the National Office and working alongside Maya Cohen, the National Office staff, and GlobeMed’s present and future leaders.
