GlobeMed Welcomes Two New Chapters to the Network
Posted on Jun 22, 2009 by Ashley Hagaman
After an arduous application cycle the National Office is thrilled to announce the launch of two new chapters for the 2009-2010 school year.
Applicants followed a rigorous process that not only challenged their knowledge and convictions about global health inequity, but also explored their personal narratives and leadership skills that will allow them to successfully lead GlobeMed on their campus. Ben Zorach of Middlebury College in Vermont and a small group of students at the University of Colorado Boulder met these challenges with great passion, a deep understanding of GlobeMed's mission, and a compelling vision for students' involvement in global health at their schools.
With an acceptance rate of only 20%, the selection for our 2009 Chapter Founders was extremely competitive - but we have no doubt that our Founders will embody the impressive qualities of our GlobeMed chapter leaders.

Mark Anoldy, Ashley Armstrong, and Will Narracci of CU - Boulder - Mark sought out the National Office at the Clinton Global Initiative- University Conference in February. There, Mark passionately explained his incredible initiative in Nepal to help end child malnutrition through a simple peanut based food. After traveling back and forth to Nepal several times, and becoming intensely driven to make his vision a reality for so many poverty stricken regions in the Himalayas, Mark discovered GlobeMed and saw a great opportunity for collaboration. We were quickly inspired by Mark and encouraged him to see if any other young minds would support a potential GlobeMed chapter back at CU - Boulder. In a matter of days, Mark introduced us to two other brilliant and inspiring students, Ashley and Will. While Mark is in Nepal (you can follow his blog here), and Ashley is in Uganda (follow her blog here), Will got to experience first hand the GlobeMed network at our global health summit back in April (pictured here) and is now setting up the infrastructure back on campus throughout the summer. Once reunited in August, we know this powerhouse of students will quickly rally several others through stories of their own amazing work and bold vision for GlobeMed at CU - Boulder.
Ben Zorach of Middlebury College - Ben, a geography major and rising junior at Middlebury, was introduced to GlobeMed through a close friend at Northwestern University. After returning from a service trip to Ecuador last summer, Ben became incredibly moved and driven to combat the extreme poverty that he angeringly witnessed first hand. GlobeMed became the perfect vector to match the hunger students have on campus for a more comprehensive medium to learn, discuss, and engage in global health with his own determination to collaborate with his peers and start making an impact on the health of these communities today. Over the past two years, Ben has been a key player pushing more global health curriculum, and eventually a global health major, on his campus. We are so excited to have Ben's genuine spirit and passionate belief that students are the key players and forerunners in this movement for global health equity and social justice.
