Jon Shaffer to be next Executive Director of GlobeMed
Posted on May 13, 2009 by Ashley Hagaman
With GlobeMed's current Executive Director, Victor Roy, set to pursue graduate studies in the fall of 2009, the organization began an extensive search process during the winter months for a new ED. To lead the process, GlobeMed's Board of Directors formed a Selection Committee made of Board members and students. The committee reviewed a diverse crop of over 50 applications for the position. Through the process, the Committee selected Jon Shaffer, who has been involved in GlobeMed since 2005, to become the next Executive Director. In Jon, the Committee found a young leader who possessed a strong understanding of GlobeMed's model, a compelling vision for strengthening a student movement for global health, and the qualities and skills needed to take on the various responsibilities of the Executive Director position
Jon served as the president of GlobeMed at Northwestern during his junior and senior years and in this time, the chapter grew from 15 student volunteers to over 35 engaged members. In addition, the chapter was able to raise over $12,000 to support innovative projects at their health partner, the HOPE Center in Ho, Ghana. In August of 2008, he had the privilege of traveling to Ghana to work alongside grassroots health workers at the HOPE Center to grow the partnership through an information technology and nutrition project. Jon reflects, "My experiences with the GlobeMed chapter at Northwestern have had a powerful shaping influence on my life. I see GlobeMed as a systematic way for undergraduates to have an impact on global health NOW, but also as a means for inspiring and training the next generation of global health leaders. I am thrilled to have the opportunity, as the next executive director, to use my story and experiences in continuing to strengthen the movement for global health equity."
Hailing from the great state of Oregon, Jon graduated from Newberg High School in 2005. Since being accepted to Northwestern University, Jon has devoted himself to studying biomedical engineering and global health. He has been an active leader on campus for global health equity through his leadership of the GlobeMed's chapter at Northwestern, organizing and moderating a student-led seminar focusing on global health, and blogging about global health issues. In addition, Jon gained a deeper understanding of nonprofit management through his work with campusCATALYST, a student-driven nonprofit consulting corp, where he worked with a local nonprofit to develop an innovative income generating program. He is eager to bring all of these experiences into his new role as Executive Director and is excited about GlobeMed's growing capacity to develop the next generation of leaders in global health.
Victor Roy, GlobeMed's outgoing Executive Director, expressed his enthusiasm for what lies ahead: "I'm very excited and confident in the selection of Jon - he has a great track record of leadership, and truly understands the unique mission of GlobeMed. I look forward to seeing great things from Jon in the coming years". Victor and Jon will be working together with the entire GlobeMed team to transition during this coming summer. Victor will be leaving for graduate studies at Cambridge University in the UK in mid-September and will share his reflections on his experience with GlobeMed in the upcoming months.
