Letter from our new Program Director: Sarah Endres
Posted on Oct 6, 2011 by Jill Shah
GlobeMed National Office gives a warm welcome to the latest addition to our full-time staff, Sarah Endres, who joins the staff as one of two Program Directors. Sarah graduated from Rhodes College in the spring of 2011, where she served as one of the founding executive board members of the GlobeMed at Rhodes chapter. Through the course of her college career, Sarah held several leadership positions at the GlobeMed at Rhodes chapter, including globalhealthU Coordinator, Director of Communications, and Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) Coordinator. As Program Director, Sarah’s duties include chapter advising and overseeing GlobeMed’s global health and leadership development curriculum. Below, Sarah shares her thoughts on entering this new position.
Dear fellow GlobeMedders,
I am so honored and thrilled to be writing to you as your newest Program Director! When I got involved in GlobeMed at Rhodes College (in Memphis) three years go I remember getting emails from full-time staff names like ‘Victor Roy’ and ‘Jon Shaffer’ and thinking they must be stodgy old professors. When I walked into my first Summit in 2009 I was blown away by the palpable energy in the room--and everyone except for the speakers was under the age of 25! At the closing dinner, I listened as two seniors described the impact of GlobeMed on their lives, and it was at that moment that I knew that I was officially hooked for life.
Since that Summit I have remained immersed in all things GlobeMed, and this past summer I participated in what I consider to be the capstone of the GlobeMed experience: the grassroots onsite work (GROW) internship. Rhodes is partnered with AMOS Health and Hope in Nicaragua and we’ve been working with them on a water filter project for the past two years. It was so inspiring to finally experience our partnership on the ground level and witness the impact we’ve made as a team. I heard incredible stories of solidarity, such as a community health worker who mobilized fifty community members to carry a pregnant woman down a mountain to where an ambulance was waiting for her—in the middle of the night. I witnessed the power of the partnership model to sustain lasting change. Most importantly, I developed relationships and memories that will remain with me for a very long time.
It is these connections and memories that have made GlobeMed what it is today: a powerful web of relationships between the chapters, partners, and National Office that are uniquely positioned to be at the forefront of change. It is because of these relationships that I am so incredibly excited to begin working for you at this point in our growth. I cherish the relationships that have already been established thanks to Summits, GROW internships, and chapter meetings, and I can’t wait to build new relationships with all of you as this year rolls on.
One of my favorite quotes from the 2011 Summit was spoken by Jessica Beckerman: “Solidarity is love structured into action”. GlobeMed has equipped me with the tools necessary to structure my love into action in Memphis, in Nicaragua, and now all over the place with each of you.
Let’s make this year epic.
With love (structured into action),
Sarah
