The New Colonialists?

To continue the discussion of critical and thoughtful volunteerism and international work, I just thought that I'd forward a couple more good reads that are relevant to the discussion that we had at our meeting tonight. The first is a short article in the North by Northwestern Magazine talking about the state of volunteerism on the Northwestern campus + a money quote by our pal VLee. The second article, titled The New Colonialists, is an interesting criticism of NGO work saying that private aid and relief agencies often act as a crutch to developing world governments - thus not allowing them to develop strategies to solve problems and driving dependence.
Do you agree with this argument? How can GlobeMed at NU work to avoid causing some of the problems cited in the article?
