Chapter Profiles GlobeMed at University of Chicago
Who We Are
Founded in 2010, GlobeMed at UChicago is one of 46 GlobeMed chapters working to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world. We partner with ASPAT to advocate for high-quality Tuberculosis education and care for the communities in and around Callao, Peru, and to accompany TB patients through their illness.
Our Partner - Association of People Affected by Tuberculosis (ASPAT) in Callao, Peru
ASPAT was founded 2007 by former TB patients in the northern neighborhood of Lima called Callao who recognized the need for increased support and education for people battling TB in Peru. Based on their own challenges fighting the disease with a lack of knowledge, as well as lack of support from their community and their government, ASPAT members organized to make sure the experiences they had while fighting TB would not be repeated. ASPAT’s main areas of work include nutrition, education, prevention, promotion of rights and citizen participation, and increasing resources to help fight TB. Because TB has long been established as a disease of poverty, ASPAT also focuses on poverty alleviation projects throughout the community.
Our Project - $1250 for counseling, education and poverty alleviation for communities impacted by TB in Callao, Peru
This winter we aim to raise $1250 for the following projects. Your donation will go to one of the three projects designed to better the lives of poverty stricken people affected by tuberculosis in Callao, Peru.
Income Generating Program: 20 TB patients will receive the materials and training necessary to create and sell handicrafts including necklaces, rings, key chains and bracelets ($500). This project is not merely economic, but will also provide the people affected by TB with a meaningful task and allow them to contribute to their families’ income. TB patients in Callao are frequently young adults and often the main breadwinners for their families. With your help, we can not only assist the patients and their families financially, but we can also restoring some of the power a person with TB has lost to the disease.
Group Therapy: 15 patients will have the opportunity to participate in much needed psychology therapy ($500).The road to recovery for a TB patient is quite strenuous. The medication they take every day often for many months often causes extreme nausea among other side effects. Perpetual fear of death as well as a reduced social support network due to stigmatization against people afflicted with TB also can contribute to depression and other psychological problems for TB patients. Your donation will help 15 TB patients successfully navigate the road to recovery.
Awareness Posters: 500 education posters addressing Tuberculosis will be posted around the city of Callao, especially in areas where TB is especially prevalent ($250). These posters will help to prevent stigmatization of patients and transmission of TB by increasing awareness and knowledge.
