Who We Are

Founded in 2010, GlobeMed at Vanderbilt is one of 46 GlobeMed chapters working to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world. We partner with Dios es Amor in la Tablada de Lurin and Paracas, Peru. Together, we work to improve the health, education and nutrition of marginalized communities through a rights-based approach.

Our Partner - Dios es Amor

Dios es Amor is a community-based NGO based in Lima, Peru that has become an incredible model of effective community-centered grassroots health organizing. Their areas of focus include health, education and nutrition. Staffed by health promoters and nurses from the community, Dios es Amor implements several initiatives throughout la Tablada de Lurin including recycling programs, diabetes and hypertension education forums for elderly patients, and after school tutoring in conjunction with meal programs for youth in the area.

Our Project - $5,000 to support the construction of a health clinic in Las Antillas, Peru

A more recent part of Dios Es Amor’s work includes the development of health campaigns and a health promoter program in the community of Las Antillas de Paracas. In 2007, a large-scale earthquake and subsequent tsunami off the coast of Peru destroyed many communities in the Paracas region.  This year (2011-2012), GlobeMed at Vanderbilt aims to raise $5,000 to support the construction of a basic healthcare clinic on an empty lot in Las Antillas that was given to Dios es Amor in order to sustain and bolster their impact. GlobeMed at Vanderbilt also aims to raise $2,000 to support various improvements throughout the main project site in La Tablada including adding new roofs(currently they have leaky tin roofs) to the the two buildings and updating the rooms where the boys live.  Lastly we hope to raise $1,000 to help buy new machinery for the recycling program. This machinery will be used to convert different recyclable materials into crafts that can be sold for profit. Items that will be purchased include a glass cutter and a machine to flatten plastic bottles.
